Humans are 'set' to self-actualize by virtue of their physiological make-up just as a sunflower seed is 'set' by its make-up to grow into a plant. But the admission of the self-actualizing tendency in humans cannot fairly be placed on the same level as that in sunflowers which do not entertain the concept of purpose. Since one cannot eradicate the consciousness of purpose from humans, Maslow's denial of purposiveness (forced upon him by his 'scientific' determinism) is unconvincing. And since one cannot intelligibly entertain the concept of purpose in a mechanistic framework, the notions of purpose and self-actualization cannot apply to sunflowers, but only to humans.

Favorite Movies
E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial (1982 film)
Both a classic movie for kids and a remarkable portrait of my childhood, E.T. is a sci-fi adventure that captures that strange moment in youth when the world is a place of mysterious possibilities (some wonderful, some awful), and the universe seems somehow separate from the one inhabited by grown-ups. I like Henry Thomas and Drew Barrymore, the stars in this film.
